Abstract:
Orthognathid surgery nowadays is no longer just a means to treat malocclusion that cat't be corrected orthodontically alone. Every face has to be designed to achieve multiple goals which are facial aesthetics, occlusion, airway space and TMJ health. These four factors are always being considered during the detailed planning phase. It is more and more accepted that the efficiency of surgico-orthodontic treatment is greatly improved by surgery-first approach. But the indication of surgery-first approach and the timing for surgery for those cases not indicated for surgery-first approach still remained controversial. This lecture will focus on the key to successful surgery-first/early approach and how we can achieve the goal of shortened total treatment time while minimizing the post-operative orthodontic work and increasing the stability of bony movement. We can never go against the trend that the Era of Virtual Planning is coming. The efficiency, predictability and accuracy of orthognathic surgery is just being raised to a higher level. We pre-see where the bone interference is, precisely align the dental midline to the facial midline, correct the cant yaw deviation simpler than ever. Surgeon and patients are enjoying all those benefits technology has brought to this field.
